Yesterday, Ms. Kim’s fourth-grade class visited a planetarium. It was a big round room with rows of seats in a circle and a dome overhead. While the class was getting seated, a student asked, “Where are the plants?”
Ms. Kim said, “The word planetarium comes from planet, not plant. We’re here to learn about planets and stars.” In the center of the room was a large sphere. It was a metal ball that was full of small holes. An amiable man walked in with a smile and started the program, which was called a sky show. He said that the dome was a big screen and the sphere was a star projector. A light in the projector shines through the holes and makes images of stars on the screen.
The room began to darken slowly, as if the Sun were going down. Finally it was very dark and the stars came out. “This is what the sky will look like at ten o’clock tonight,” the man said. The students saw the planet Mars, which glowed red. They saw the stars of the Big Dipper and Orion. They learned that because Earth rotates, the stars appear to move across the sky during the night. Then they learned that because of the way Earth orbits the Sun, people see different stars at different times of the year. When the show was over, some students said they were going to look at the stars that night.
