Taking Care of Children |

My name is Oskar, and I am from Denmark . Last year, I had a shocking experience. I visited New York City with my daughter, Kirsten. She was fourteen months old. One day, I put Kirsten in herstroller and went to a bank. I wanted to change some money. When we got to the bank, Kirsten was asleep. I went into the bank and left Kirsten outside. I waited in line. Suddenly, two police officers entered the bank. They arrested me!

Kirsten woke up and began to cry. People worried about her. Two people went into the bank tolook for Kirsten’s parents. They told Oskar that Kirsten was crying, but Oskar did not bring the baby inside. The people called the police. In New York City, parents cannot leave a small child alone. It is against the law.

But Oskar said that in Denmark, parents often leave their children outside in strollers. The children are safe. Nobody hurts them. Danish people watch out for each other’s children. Oskar thought that things were the same in the United States.

After two days, the police learned that Oskar told them the truth. In Denmark, people really do leave their children alone. The police let Oskar go. He went back to Denmark with Kirsten.
